The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

Mechanism of Breathing

The air that we breathe in and breathe out of the lungs varies in its pressure. So basically when there is a fall down in air pressure the alveolar spaces drop down and the air enters the lungs (inspiration) as the pressure of the alveoli surpasses the atmospheric pressure, the air that is blown from the lungs (expiration). The rate of flow of air is in proportion to the magnitude of the pressure difference.

The breathing mechanism involves the following two processes:

  • Inspiration - A contraction of muscles attached to the ribs on the outer side which pulls out the ribs and results in the expansion of the chest cavity is the process of inspiration.
  • Expiration - The expiration process is considered once after the gaseous exchange takes place in the lungs and the air is expelled out. And the expulsion of air is called expiration.
