Opinion: Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was indeed one of the first prominent social
reformers in Maharashtra, and perhaps in all of India. He challenged the deeply ingrained
caste system and fought against the oppression of lower castes, especially the Dalits. Phule
also made significant contributions to women’s rights, particularly by founding the first
school for girls in Pune. His efforts in social reform laid the foundation for movements like
the Dalit Panthers in the 20th century. Phule’s radical ideas and commitment to justice made
him a pioneering figure in India’s social reform movement.
