The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Established in 1986, the NCRB was created to serve as a repository of information on crime and criminals, enabling better coordination among law enforcement agencies across the country.
Its primary responsibilities include the collection, analysis, and dissemination of crime data to assist policymakers and law enforcement in developing effective strategies for crime prevention and law enforcement. NCRB is best known for publishing the annual "Crime in India" report, which provides comprehensive statistics on various types of crimes across states and union territories.
In addition to maintaining national databases on crimes, criminals, and stolen property, NCRB also manages the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), which integrates police stations across the country to enhance efficiency and transparency in crime investigations.
By functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the NCRB plays a pivotal role in strengthening internal security mechanisms and supporting evidence-based governance and policing in India.
