Kala-azar, also known as black water fever nor dumdum fever, is a serious oriental disease of man. It is caused by Leishmania donovani, which is transmitted from man to man by the bite of smallnblood sucking sandflies called Phlebotom us argentipes. Kala-azar is characterised by the enlargement of spleen due to blockage of reticulo endothelial system by parasites. Trypanosoma cruzi, T.brucei & T.gambiense causes Chagas disease, Nagana disease and African sleeping sickness respectively.
