Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO\textsubscript{2}), methane (CH\textsubscript{4}), nitrous oxide (N\textsubscript{2}O), and water vapor trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. They allow sunlight to enter but prevent the escape of heat back into space. This natural process is known as the greenhouse effect. Due to human activities like burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial emissions, the concentration of these gases has increased, intensifying the greenhouse effect and causing a rise in Earth’s average temperature—this phenomenon is known as global warming.
