Horace Danby failed to get enough information about real occupants of the house. He seemed to be too occupied with collecting other little details and information about house map, wiring and location of valuable things. Although he was smart enough to know the dog’s actual name but overlooked getting identity of each and every occupant of the house. Once he was in problem then probably his clever mind gave way to carelessness leading him to open the safe without wearing gloves.

Horace Danby was a careful planner, but even he made mistakes. He was known for planning his robberies very carefully, knowing all the details about the Shotover Grange. He knew exactly when the house would be empty and even the name of the dog there. However, he was completely tricked by a lady he encountered at the house. She fooled him with her clever ways, and he didn't realize that she could be a thief herself. When he saw her, he got scared and begged her to let him go. She asked him to get the jewels for her, and he agreed without hesitation. He didn't find it strange that she let him leave without calling the police. He was just happy to get away. In his rush, he didn't notice that he left his fingerprints all over the safe. He trusted the lady blindly, and so, despite his careful planning, he faltered.
