The Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSAI) was established in the year 2006. This act was enacted to consolidate various food laws and to establish the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The aim of the act is to ensure safe and wholesome food for consumers by regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products.
Although the act was passed in 2006, the FSSAI became operational in 2008, and the regulations came into force in 2011.
