Comprehension
Analyse the following transcript (from the movie Matrix) and provide an appropriate answer for the questions that follow:

Neo: Morpheus, what's happened to me? What is this place?
Morpheus: More important than what is when.
Neo: When?
Morpheus: You believe it's the year 1999 when in fact it's closer to 2199. I can't tell you exactly what year it is because we honestly don't know. There's nothing I can say that will explain it for you, Neo. Come with me. See for yourself. This is my ship, the Nebuchadnezzar. It's a hovercraft. This is the main deck. This is the core where we broadcast our pirate signal and hack into the Matrix. Most of my crew you already know.

(Next Scene: Construct)

Morpheus: This is the construct. It's our loading programme. We can load anything from clothing, to equipment, weapons, training simulations, anything we need.
Neo: Right now we're inside a computer programme?
Morpheus: Is it really so hard to believe? Your clothes are different. The plugs in your arms and head are gone. Your hair is changed. Your appearance now is what we call residual self image. It is the mental projection of your digital self.
Neo: This... this isn't real?
Morpheus: What is real? How do you define real? If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.

...This is the world that you know. The world as it was at the end of the twentieth century. It exists now only as part of a neural-interactive simulation that we call the Matrix. You've been living in a dream world, Neo... This is the world as it exists today. Welcome to the Desert of the Real. We have only bits and pieces of information but what we know for certain is that at some point in the early twenty-first century all of mankind was united in celebration. We marvelled at our own magnificence as we gave birth to AI.
Neo: AI? You mean artificial intelligence?
Morpheus: A singular consciousness that spawned an entire race of machines. We don't know who struck first, us or them. But we know it was us that scorched the sky. At the time they were dependent on solar power and it was believed that they would be unable to survive without an energy source as abundant as the sun. Throughout human history, we have been dependent on machines to survive. Fate it seems is not without a sense of irony. The human body generates more bio-electricity than a 120-volt battery and over 25,000 BTU's of body heat. Combined with a form of fusion the machines have found all the energy they would ever need. There are fields, endless fields, where human beings are no longer born, we are grown. For the longest time I wouldn't believe it, and then I saw the fields with my own eyes. Watch them liquefy the dead so they could be fed intravenously to the living. And standing there, facing the pure horrifying precision, I came to realize the obviousness of the truth. What is the Matrix? Control. The Matrix is a computer generated dream world built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this.
Neo: No. I don't believe it. It's not possible.
Morpheus: I didn't say it would be easy, Neo. I just said it would be the truth.
Neo: Stop. Let me out. Let me out. I want out.
Question: 1

The innate factor responsible for the status of human beings in the later part of the 22nd century is:

Show Hint

Always distinguish between \textbf{cause} and \textbf{consequence}. In RC questions like this, root causes are explicitly mentioned early in the narrative, while later outcomes only describe consequences.

  • Due to human beings living in a dream world and being happy about it.
  • The ability of human body to generate bio-electricity.
  • The decision to scorch the sky.
  • The development of artificial intelligence by human beings.
  • Due to human beings developing the ability to hack into the matrix.

The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Identify the core cause from the transcript.
Morpheus clearly states that the downfall of humans began when “we marvelled at our own magnificence as we gave birth to AI.” The machines then evolved, took over, and subjugated humanity.
Step 2: Examine each option carefully.
- Option (A): The fact that humans live in a dream world is the outcome of being trapped in the Matrix, not the original cause.
- Option (B): The ability of the body to generate electricity is what makes humans useful to machines as an energy source, but it is not the innate factor that caused the situation.
- Option (C): Scorching the sky was a desperate human countermeasure, not the root cause.
- Option (D): The creation of AI is the pivotal act that triggered the entire chain of events leading to human enslavement. This is directly mentioned as the primary cause.
- Option (E): Hacking into the Matrix is something done later by rebels; it has no role in causing the initial downfall.
Step 3: Conclude.
The passage attributes the origin of the human condition to the creation of artificial intelligence. \[ \boxed{\text{Development of AI by humans (Option D)}} \]

Question: 2

Choose the option that cannot be inferred from the idea discussed in the transcript:

Show Hint

In inference-based RC questions, focus on what is \textbf{explicitly stated} or \textbf{logically implied}. If any detail (like time duration) is absent, it cannot be inferred safely.
Updated On: Aug 25, 2025
  • Morpheus and his crew have developed an ability to hack into the matrix.
  • A war between human beings and machines is going on for some decades.
  • The sources of power for human beings and machines were different.
  • Machines require human beings for their survival now.
  • Morpheus and his crew are not entirely controlled by the matrix.

The Correct Option is B

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Recall key points from the transcript.
Morpheus explained that:
- His crew hacks into the Matrix using pirate signals.
- Machines now survive on bio-electricity and body heat of humans.
- Humans originally depended on machines, and machines later reversed this dependence.
- Humans scorched the sky in the past, but the exact duration of the war is not specified.
Step 2: Check each option.
- Option (A): True, since Morpheus demonstrates hacking into the Matrix.
- Option (B): The transcript does mention that there was a conflict (“we don’t know who struck first”), but it does not explicitly say that the war has been “going on for decades.” Hence this cannot be inferred.
- Option (C): True, since originally machines depended on solar energy, whereas humans drew survival from other resources.
- Option (D): True, because the machines now derive energy directly from humans.
- Option (E): True, since Morpheus and his crew can hack into the Matrix, indicating they are not completely controlled by it.
Step 3: Conclude.
The only statement that cannot be inferred directly from the transcript is about the war “going on for decades.” \[ \boxed{\text{Option B cannot be inferred}} \]

Question: 3

Widespread use of lectures in classrooms in business schools leads to severe negative consequences. The first consequence is theoretically knowledgeable graduates who cannot apply theory to solve real world problems. The more serious consequence is that lectures encourage a feeling of total omniscience among them which persists for quite some time after graduating. This feeling prevents them from learning from their subordinates and colleagues. Which of the following can best help to reduce these negative consequences among the students in a business school?

Show Hint

In application-based RC questions, the right choice usually balances theory with practice rather than choosing extremes. Look for options that integrate, not eliminate, knowledge.
Updated On: Aug 25, 2025
  • Use illustrations of real life problems in classrooms.
  • Send the students to find business problems so that it can be discussed in classrooms.
  • Business education to be given to students, who have work experience.
  • Modify the pedagogy to have knowledge of theory and application in parallel.
  • Removing theoretical inputs from the curriculum altogether; only practical problems to be discussed in classrooms.

The Correct Option is D

Solution and Explanation

Step 1: Understand the problem in the question.
The main issue described is that lectures in business schools focus too much on theory without linking it to practical application. As a result:
1. Graduates cannot solve real-world problems effectively.
2. Students develop an inflated sense of knowledge (omniscience), which prevents continuous learning.
Step 2: Consider the options one by one.
- Option (A): Using real-life illustrations is helpful, but simply adding examples does not ensure systematic integration of theory with practice. Partial solution only.
- Option (B): Sending students to find problems is useful, but it is only an activity, not a structural change in pedagogy. It may not consistently solve the core issue.
- Option (C): Restricting business education only to those with work experience is impractical and exclusionary. It does not address the root teaching issue.
- Option (D): Modifying pedagogy so that theory and application are taught in parallel directly addresses the problem. Students will not only learn concepts but also how to apply them in real situations. This reduces the gap and prevents overconfidence. This is the most effective solution.
- Option (E): Removing theoretical inputs altogether is extreme and counterproductive. Business education needs a balance of theory and practice, not the elimination of one.
Step 3: Conclude.
The best option is to change pedagogy to ensure simultaneous exposure to both theory and application. \[ \boxed{\text{Modify pedagogy to combine theory and application (Option D)}} \]
